Applications: Pump Sumps

Grease and fats in pump sumps and lift stations cause a number of major problems. The problems arising from grease in these systems include: -

  • Blocked pumps
  • Bad smells
  • Production of noxious gases
  • Faults with float switches
  • Flooding
  • Increased maintenance on pump sumps

These grease-related problems result in considerable expense on emergency maintenance on pumps. Traditional methods for dealing with the problems include the use of specialist contractors with suction equipment or hazardous chemicals to dissolve the grease and move it further down the pipe network.

BFL 5150PS harnesses the power of environmental biotechnology to solve the problems caused by grease in a completely safe and natural way. BFL 5150PS contains a blend of harmless, natural micro-organisms that have the ability to degrade grease. This degradation process ensures that grease is destroyed and can't reform further down the pipe or sewer.

The benefits of treatment of pump sumps and lift stations with BFL 5150PS include:

  • Elimination of bad odours
  • Reduces frequency of pump outs
  • Removes grease from pump sumps and lift stations
  • Reduced pipe maintenance
  • Safe for maintenance staff
  • Planned maintenance costs
  • Eliminates the formation of dangerous gases
  • Reduced maintenance on pumps and float switches
  • Reduces grease at inlet to wastewater treatment plants
  • Compatible with biological treatment systems

    What is BFL 5150PS?

BFL 5150PS is a powder product that contains a wide range of micro-organisms that have been specially selected for their ability to efficiently degrade grease. They also are efficient in degrading other organic waste materials encountered in the pump sump and lift station environment. These bacteria produce a range of enzymes that degrade grease, starch, protein and cellulose. The key to the degradation of grease and other compounds that are not water-soluble is the production of biosurfactants. This helps to emulsify the grease so that it can be degraded more efficiently. The bacteria in BFL 5150PS have been selected for their ability to produce biosurfactants. A small quantity of biodegradable surfactant is included to start the process until the bacteria produce their own biosurfactants to continue the degradation process.

    Directions for use

BFL 5150PS is a powder product on a cereal base that is provided in the form of 250g sachets for ease of dosing. Empty the contents of the sachet into a bucket (10 litre) of lukewarm water (~30oC), stir well and allow to stand for at least 30 minutes before dosing. BFL 5150PS should be dosed directly to the pump sump.

As pump sumps vary in size and load, a treatment programme is devised for each situation. The Technical Department will access each site and design a suitable dosing programme.

    Applications for BFL 5150PS

BFL 5150PS is typically used for the treatment of pump sumps and lift stations. When used in pump sumps and lift stations on a regular basis it has a beneficial effect downstream at the inlet to a wastewater treatment system where it significantly reduces grease accumulation on surfaces. BFL 5150PS is totally compatible with wastewater treatment plants and, in fact, works to help the performance of biological treatment by starting the degradation of organic materials such as fats and grease.

    Product safety

The micro-organisms in BFL 5150PS have all been isolated from natural environments. They have not been genetically modified in any way. These microbial strains have been classified as being harmless to humans, animals and plants. The product is subjected to independent testing to ensure that it is free of Salmonella and other contaminants.
